Job description

 

Web Developer - Java Position Overview:

 

The University of Minnesota's Office of Information Technology (OIT) seeks a Web Developer talented in multiple programming languages (preferably Java and XML) who will be responsible for developing and maintaining a wide variety of enterprise applications. Ideal candidates will be self-motivated and willing to adapt to a changing environment. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to value diversity are required. Excellent analytical, decision-making, and learning skills are also essential.

 

Job Duties:

 

Develop high-quality software for web or custom applications using a variety of programming languages, technologies, and techniques

· Writes well-documented code in compliance with established coding standards

· Designs, implements, and executes tests to insure correct behavior in software

· Uses logging or debugging tools to identify errors in software

· Produces high-quality technical designs for small to mid-sized projects based on knowledge of current technologies, practices, and design patterns

· Interprets business requirements and maps them to appropriate technical solutions

· Produces data models consistent with the business domain for the software under development. Considers available infrastructure, and tools when making design decisions

· Participates in the scheduling of build and test cycles with the project team

· Communicates regularly regarding project progress, technical alternatives, and known risks to release schedules

· Maintains a clean and well-structured code base suitable for parallel development

· Communicates with co-developers to ensure code remains in an consistent and buildable state in a version control system

· Consult with business analysts on technical questions during requirements gathering and functional design phases of software projects

 

Required Qualifications:

 

¿ BA/BS degree in Computer Science/MIS or related field and 3+ years of related professional work experience OR a combination of education and related professional work experience totaling 7 years
¿ Experience designing and developing web applications
¿ Experience with HTML, XML, and SQL.
¿ Experience with one or more programming languages used in web development.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

· Knowledge of XML technologies (e.g. XML Schema, DTD, XSLT, WSDL, SOAP),
· Experience with Java technologies (JSTL, JSP, JSF)
· Experience with a dynamic programming language
· Demonstrated expertise in using development tools (e.g. CVS, SVN, ANT, JUnit, Eclipse)
· Knowledge of ORM frameworks (e.g. Hibernate)
· Practical experience building MVC applications and applying design patterns
· Excellent analytical, decision-making, and learning skills
· Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to value diversity
· Motivated to develop self and willing to adapt to a changing environment
· Discusses ideas and writes in a clear, organized, and complete manner
· Works independently or in groups
